Mother’s Day is this weekend and I wanted to give a shout out to all the moms. You may be a mom who is in the sleep deprived, survival stage, or the pick your battles toddler stage, or the “I know why animals in the wild eat their young” teenage stage.
Maybe you are a single mom, and if so, you are a ROCKSTAR. Some of you are adoptive moms, stepmoms, or spiritual moms that pour into children that you have CHOSEN, loving and living with those you didn’t birth but who have your very essence coursing through their veins. Others, (myself included) have little angels that won’t be drawing us pictures or giving us cards, because they are in our future and someday we will celebrate with them in heaven.
As we partake in all kinds of festivities over the weekend, be it brunch or lunch or breakfast in bed, I think about my friends who have had the unfortunate event of saying “goodbye” to their precious mothers all too soon. I also have friends who had horrible or even no relationships with their moms and this weekend is a reminder of that part of their lives.
Regardless of the category you fall into, here is my hope for you this weekend. I want you to let Lord be your Heavenly Mother. Now, before you start screaming sacrilege or getting your religious undies in a bunch, just read this all the way the through, I promise I’ll make sense.
For Father’s Day we always hear “Let the Lord be your Heavenly Father. God does have the ATTRIBUTES of a father as a protector and provider but He also has the ATTRIBUTES of a MOTHER. The Bible says that He is a comforter. Isaiah 66:13 “As a mother comforts her child, so will I (God) comfort you.”
Who do your children go to when they don’t feel good? Yeah, mine too. Dad could be sitting in the same room as them and they will walk up the stairs look in every room, open every door, yell my name over and over, just to tell me their throat hurts. Or, in the middle of the night, they will bypass their dad’s side of the bed, and lovingly choose to puke on me. They do this because 1) Dad is a sympathetic puker and 2) They know I’ll comfort them, even if they’re still throwing up.
Psalms 91:4 says, “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” I think about the mother eagle doing this as a storm rolls through, and I imagine as she spreads those huge, majestic wings over her down covered babies she’s whispering to them “There, there. Hush now. It’s going to be okay. You’re going to be okay. I’m here.”
Regardless of how we have come about the title of “mom”, we are amazing creatures. But we also need to be “mothered.” I want to encourage you to let the Heavenly Father also be your Heavenly Mother. Let Him comfort you. Let him nurture you. Let him love on you. Let Him spread his wings over you and whisper to your tumultuous spirit “There, there. Hush now, I’m here. You’re going to be okay.”
And you know what? We are going to be okay. I know It’s hard. Motherhood is so freakin’ hard. But you and me? We’re gonna make it, because we have THE best Mother and Father in the universe looking out for us, comforting us and protecting us.
Happy Mothers Day!!! You are Stunningly Strong!!!
xoxo
